FIRMWARE UPDATE DEVICE AND METHOD

Provided is a firmware update device which can cope with a trouble during an update and requires a short system stop time for the update while suppressing the nonvolatile memory capacity for storing firmware.  The firmware update device has such a configuration that data required for update can be accessed from either of the normal firmware or the urgent firmware.  The firmware update device includes: a means which sets the next boot destination to the urgent firmware during an update; means which saves a file before the update to a region originally occupied by an update file; a means which checks whether the file required for booting the normal firmware during the urgent firmware start is not destroyed or whether the start can actually be executed by the virtual environment; a means which returns the device to a state before the update by the save file before the update and a new update procedure automatically generated by inversing the operation content from the update procedure; and a means which describes a restart object required for each of the update files in the update procedure.
