A reading unit is provided with a first light guiding unit, the first light guiding unit causing the medium surface to be irradiated with the light from the light source, and having a tubular shape with a hollow section and an opening formed at the tip as an entrance for the light reflected from the medium surface, wherein the lens is disposed in the hollow section of the first light guiding unit such that the lens faces the opening of the first light guiding unit, the light source is disposed at an end of a slit provided inside the first light guiding unit, and the light irradiated from the light source travels through the inside of the first light guiding unit and the medium surface is uniformly irradiated with the light irradiated from the opening. |
