An impregnating agent for preserving wood or other organic material comprises one or more compounds of an ammine-forming metal which is soluble in ammoniacal solution dissolved in an aqueous solution of ammonia and carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide content being at least 80 per cent by weight of the metal content. In a modification the agent may have up to half of its carbon dioxide content replaced by a chemically equivalent weight of sulphate, chloride or negative radicals containing arsenic or fluorine and/or chlorophenol. As described, the ammine-forming metals may be copper or zinc for which the metal : ammonia ratio are 1: 1.2 to 2 and 1: 3 respectively or a mixture of both metals. The agents may also contain chromates, chromic acid, or magnesium, an arsenite and/or arensate, one or more tri- and/or tetra-chlorophenols with or without pentachlorophenol, and other chlorinated organic substances with or without nitrated organic substances. Typically the copper content should be about 0.3 per cent and if part of the copper is replaced by zinc the metal content should be increased, but not above one half per cent. For zinc alone the content should be somewhat above this.
