Aldehydes or alcohols are continuously produced by the oxo process from olefines using a cobalt catalyst by feeding an olefin, carbon monoxide and hydrogen and the cobalt catalyst or cobalt source which will yield said catalyst under the reaction conditions to a reaction vessel, continuously removing the reaction product from the reaction vessel, measuring the amount of cobalt dissolved in the reaction product and accordingly adjusting the feed rate of cobalt catalyst or source to the reaction vessel to maintain the effective catalyst concentration in the reactor as measured by the amount of cobalt dissolved in the reaction product at a substantially constant level. The amount of cobalt dissolved in the reaction product is suitably maintained at from 0.5-3% by wt. based on the weight of the reaction product and the cobalt catalyst employed, which may be fed continuously to the reaction vessel, may be in the form of metallic cobalt, cobalt oxide, cobalt carbonyl or cobalt stearate. The olefine fed to the reaction vessel may be a cracked petrol fraction, e.g. a C7 fraction.
