The disclosures herein provide pharmaceutical compositions that may contain various combinations of lipoic acid, aminoguanidine, aminoguanidium, antimicrobial agents, and L-arginine, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. In certain embodiments, the pharmaceutical compositions may be formulated for topical, transdermal, or subdermal administration, for example, as a patch or a wound dressing such as a hydrogel. These compositions may be used for treating skin ulcers, such as diabetic foot ulcers and venous ulcers.
