<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display images in high contrast without raising the manufacture cost for manufacturing a retardation plate as much as possible, for instance. <P>SOLUTION: Prior to the timing of displaying an image on the basis of image signals by the liquid crystal display device (1), a drive circuit part (210) sets the potential of a pixel electrode (9a) so as to apply an initial application voltage (Va) to a liquid crystal molecule (50b) in a pixel region (72g1) or the like on the basis of initial application voltage data stored in a memory (220), that is the setting value of the initial application voltage.
