PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve shortening of operation time and improvement in focusing accuracy by eliminating useless operation when repeating a focusing operation in automatic focus adjustment. SOLUTION: An autofocus apparatus includes: a focus lens; a photoelectric conversion means for converting a formed object image into an electrical signal; an extraction means for extracting signal components within a particular frequency band associated with the luminance of the object from an output signal of the photoelectric conversion means; and a control means for controlling the operation of the entire device. The control means moves the focus lens, also stores the output signal of the extraction means after associating it with the position of the focus lens, and calculates a distance to the object on the basis of the stored output signal so as to change a time interval T, a scanning range R and a scanning step S when repeating the focusing operation according to the distance to the object and propriety of focusing.
