<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly measure a particle diameter of a particle by using a compact apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises: a sedimentation vessel for forming a gas phase space in which the particle sediments; an irradiation means separated from a position in which the particle sediments in the gas phase space at a predetermined reference distance, and irradiating a position through which the settling particle passes with measurement light having a uniform wavelength; a light receiving means for receiving modulation light as the measurement light modulated with the particle settling in the gas phase space; a sedimentation speed obtaining means for obtaining a sedimentation speed of the particle based on a frequency of the modulation light; and a particle diameter identifying means for identifying the particle diameter of the particle based on the sedimentation speed and the reference distance.
