[Also in Division B5] A cleaning device comprises an absorbent sponge member 11 adhered to a compressible, resilient open pore, porous, hydrophobic layer 12 of a flexible, soft, non-abrasive material having a porosity which substantially inhibits the sponge member from contacting a wet or damp surface to be cleaned when the hydrophobic layer 12 of the device is wiped over the surface to be cleaned. The interface between the hydrophobic layer 12 and the sponge member 11 is water permeable so that water on the surface to be cleaned can be conducted through the hydrophobic layer 12 to the sponge member 11. The sponge member 11 may be of regenerated cellulose material and the hydrophobic layer 12 may be of foam or in the form of a retiform, skeletal network which is flaccid in its undeformed state. The hydrophobic layer 12 may be of synthetic organic polymeric resin advantageously comprising polyether or polyester polyurethane resin and, if it is in the form of a network, it may be coated with polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or chlorosulphonated polyurethane. The cleaning device may be made by arranging a web (16) (Fig. 3, not shown) of hydrophobic material to be superimposed on and embedded in a layer (13) of viscose sponge forming mass which is deposited on a continuously advancing moving belt (14). When the viscose is coagulated, the cellulose is regenerated by resistance electrical heating or by a hot salt solution and, after washing and bleaching, the composite material is cut to form cleaning devices of desired shapes and sizes. |
