A therapeutic garment or harness for applying pulsations to the pulmonary lobes to dislodge mucus in the respiratory tract is dimensioned to overlie the chest and back and carries vibrator devices adapted to apply pulsating forces perpendicular to preselected areas on the patient's chest and back. The garment may be a vest-like structure provided with pockets. The harness may consist of horizontally and vertically arranged belts in or on which the vibrator devices may be adjustably mounted. The vibrator devices may be electromechanical e.g. an electric motor coupled to a reciprocating element, or an armature caused to vibrate by energisation of a coil surrounding a laminated core to which it is attached; pneumatic e.g. a reciprocating piston operated via suitable time-controlled valves by a motordriven air compressor; or hydraulic e.g. the vibrating element may be parts of the garment having resilient walls which are expanded and contracted by pulsating fluid supplied thereto. The electromechanical vibrator devices may be operated in conjunction with a cyclic timer switch and the amplitude and frequency of vibration may be controlled using rheostats and frequency dividers and multipliers respectively. |
