1,157,698. Hydrogenation of aldehydes. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 25 Nov., 1966 [26 Nov., 1965], No. 52873/66. Heading C2C. Preparation of saturated aliphatic alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of saturated or unsaturated aldehydes in the vapour phase using a copper-nickel catalyst which contains 97-75% by weight of a silica gel carrier and 3-25% by weight of copper and nickel as activating metals, the proportion of nickel being accordingly 40-20% by weight based on the sum of the activating metals. The catalysts are prepared in conventional manner and may contain known modifying agents for copper catalysts such as chromium or magnesium or specified compounds thereof. n-Butanol and 2-ethylhexanol mixed with small amounts of the corresponding saturated aldehydes are prepared from crotonaldehyde and 2-ethylhexenal using catalysts containing 9% Cu, 3% Ni and 0À4% Cr on silica gel. In comparative examples catalysts containing 3% Cu, 9% Ni and 0À4% Cr on silica gel ; 4% Cu, 4% Ni and 0À2% Cr on pumice; 9% Cu, 3% Ni and 0À4% Cr on pumice are shown to give significant amounts of saturated aldehydes and unsaturated compounds as by-products. A similar observation is made in a two stage method wherein the aldehyde starting material is passed first over a catalyst containing 20% Cu and 1% Cr and then over a catalyst containing 9% Cu, 3% Ni and 0À4% Cr on silica gel. |
