The device (2) has an airbag (1) e.g. curtain airbag, accommodated at an upper edge of sides of a vehicle. The airbag comprises tubular fluid communication paths (40) in longitudinal direction of the upper edge of the sides of the vehicle. The fluid communication paths interconnect air chambers (41, 42). Inflators (25) comprise elongated inflator bodies (25a) arranged inside the airbag and gas supplies (25b) for supplying gas to the airbag. The gas supplies are movably arranged in longitudinal direction of the inflator bodies. The inflator bodies partially block gas flow cross sections.
