[Also in Divisions C7 and F2] A composite article made substantially of metal is produced by assembling at least two components into an assembled shape, at least one thereof being a foam cellular structure, and then coating the assembled shape with metal, thereby integrally joining the components and producing a composite article having substantially the same configuration as the assembled shape. The metal coating may be deposited by electrodeposition and may be silver, copper, nickel, iron or an alloy. The foam material may be of polyurethane, and this may be joined by the deposited metal to a solid material such as resin reinforced with carbon or glass fibre, carbon, glass, ceramic, fire brick, plastics material or metals. The polyurethane foam may subsequently be ashed out. In the examples, a mild steel plate and a mild steel cylinder are plated with nickel when in contact with a layer of polyurethane foam, the foam layer being within the copper cylinder. The latter resultant composite article may be used as a seal or bearing. |
