In brazing a lead-in wire to a metallic ferrule in a sealed-beam lamp, the ferrule having a closed bottom portion and an open rim portion, a finely divided brazing composition is provided to fill the bottom portion, the composition within the ferrule is compacted by a compressive force, the rim portion is sealed to the reflector of a sealed beam lamp and the wire is brazed to the ferrule by the composition. A ferrule 14 for a sealed beam lamp is mounted in a mould 10, Fig. 4, and the bottom thereof is filled with finely divided brazing material 16 which is compacted by a die 18. The ferrule is removed from the mould and is forced into heat softened glass around an aperture 22, Fig. 5, in the reflector 20 of a sealed beam lamp. Brazing flames 24 heat the ferrule and melt the compacted material 16 into which the lead conductor 26 is inserted and the flame is removed. The brazing composition may be entirely brass or entirely bronze or a mixture of brass and bronze with an addition of 5% of a flux, e.g. borax and possibly of 1% silica. The brass may be 55-80% Cu, 20-45% Zn and the bronze 70-90% Cu, 10-30% Sn.
