PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode active material capable of attaining an electrochemical element having high capacity and high energy density. SOLUTION: The electrode active material is composed of: fluorene-thiophene alternating copolymer in which fluorene ring is bonded to thiophene ring substantially at the 2- and 7-positions of the fluorene ring and the thiophene ring is bonded to the fluorene ring substantially at the 2- and 5-positions of the thiophene ring; or fluorene-2,2'-bithiophene alternating copolymer in which fluorene ring is bonded to 2,2'-bithiophene ring substantially at the 2- and 7-positions of the fluorene ring and the 2,2'-bithiophene ring is bonded to the fluorene ring substantially at the 5- and 5'-positions of the 2,2'-bithiophene ring. The electrode active material has considerably-increased capacity in comparison with an electrode active material composed of bulk-polymerized polyfluorene polymerized at an irregular position, obtained by polymerization using ferric chloride (III) as a catalyst.
