<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting a head position and a recording medium drive unit which correctly positions a head. Ž<P>SOLUTION: First magnetic dots 28 are arranged at equal intervals in a first record track 25. Second magnetic dots 28 are arranged at the same intervals as those between the first magnetic dots 28 in a second record track 25. The second magnetic dots 28 are arranged to the first magnetic dot 28 in shifting to a down track direction. Then the first magnetic dots 28 and the second magnetic dots 28 are arranged alternately along a boundary 31 on the first record track 25 and the second record track 25 adjacent to each other. If the head 32 deviates from the boundary 31, a difference arises between a first output of a signal read from the first record track 25 and a second output of a signal read from the second record track 25.
