<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high-speed scene discrimination at low cost. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A digital camera 1 includes a data compression section 221 for compressing a photographic image by frequency conversion. A characteristic data generation section 214 performs frequency conversion on the photographic image by utilizing frequency conversion operation of the data compression section 221 and further performs frequency conversion on a set of data for each converted frequency component to generate characteristic data representing characteristics of the photographic image. A scene discriminating section 215 compares a characteristic data sample stored in advance in a storing section 250 with the generated characteristic data to discriminate the scene of the image to be imaged. An operation mode processing section 211 causes a display section 310 to display an advice screen for prompting a scene setting change when the current scene setting is different from the discriminated scene.
