PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniform the flow of blood in the cross-section of a blood channel, improve gas exchange efficiency, and reduce the formation of thrombi and occurrence of hematolysis. SOLUTION: The membrane oxygenator includes: a gas exchange module 1, in which a hollow-fiber bundle in which hollow-fiber membranes 3 are arranged is sealed with a sealing member 4 with both its ends exposed and the sealing member has a blood channel 5 passing blood across the hollow-fiber membranes formed so as to come into contact with the outside surfaces of the hollow-fiber membranes; and a housing 2 storing the gas exchange module with the blood channel vertically oriented, having a gas inlet 6a and a gas outlet 6b oppositely to both the ends of the hollow-fiber membranes and having a blood inlet 8 and a blood outlet 9 in the upper and lower parts of the blood channel. Gas exchanges take place between the blood flowing in the blood channel and the gas flowing in the lumens of the hollow-fiber membranes. The housing has a dome portion 10 surrounding the blood inlet and is provided with a blood inflow port 11 on the side of the dome portion and an air outflow port 12 on the top of the dome portion.
