The method involves manufacturing a blank (30) from a metallic material e.g. steel material, for a piston or a piston upper part. A circulating recess (12) is brought into a top side (13) of the blank. A part (14) of the recess is sealed using a covering part (17) for forming a circulating cooling channel. Remaining parts (15) of the recess is filled with an auxiliary material by welding. The blank is finished to the piston or the piston upper part. The piston upper part is connected with other components for finishing the piston. An independent claim is also included for a piston or piston upper part for an internal combustion engine.
