<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection mechanism and a detection method for accurately detecting the full stack of a sheet medium held by a holding part for holding the sheet medium after postprocessing or for postprocessing, regardless of the state of the sheet medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A sheet medium detection mechanism 235 includes an actuator 235a for applying a load in the predetermined direction so that the tip of the sheet medium proceeds to a tray to the carried sheet medium, a weight 235c for applying a predetermined load to the actuator, and a detector 235b for detecting displacement of the actuator.
