PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constantly keep the height of an empty bag at an adequate height so that the position where the gripper 1 grips the bag mouth of the empty bag is kept unchanged, when the uppermost empty bag in a stacked group of the empty bags is taken out sequentially from the group of empty bags and positioned to a bag bottom reference, and this bag is transferred to a gripper 1 of a bag packaging apparatus, the group of empty bags being stacked in a conveyor magazine 3 such that the bag bottom face forward and the uppermost bag is displaced forward. SOLUTION: Empty bag supply method and apparatus first lift up with a first suction member 31 an empty bag 2 of which the bag bottom being brought into contact with and positioned to the bag bottom reference by a first positioning stopper 18. The lifted bag 2 is then held by chucks 35 and transported upward so that the empty bag is vertical with the bag bottom facing upward, and then a second suction member 41 sucks the empty bag 2 near the bag mouth and transports it onto a conveyor 46, located in a lower position, with the bag mouth facing forward, so that the bag mouth of the bag is stopped and positioned to a bag mouth reference by a second stopper 49. The empty bag 2 is then lifted up by a third suction member 56, held by a chuck 62 and transported upward so that the attitude of the bag is changed to vertical with the bag mouth facing upward, and then the bag is transferred to the gripper 1.
