The safety element (1) has a liquid crystal layer arranged in a part of data fields and formed such that the liquid crystal layer is transparent and colorless for a naked human eye. The liquid crystal layer has liquid crystals oriented in the data fields and polarizing incident light. The safety element partially reflects the light polarized by the oriented liquid crystal. The safety element forms a barcode e.g. one dimensional barcode, in the data fields. The bar code is invisible to the naked human eye, and an orientation layer is provided in an area of the data fields. An independent claim is also included for a method for reading safety information from a safety document.
