The engine (1) has an exhaust gas line (3) for supplying a flue gas to a cylinder and a suction line (4) for supplying fresh air and/or fresh mixture to the cylinder. An exhaust gas recirculation line (5) downwardly diverts a turbine (2a) from the exhaust gas line under formation of a branching (5a). An air supply device (7) is provided at the gas recirculation line. A supply line downwardly diverts the air supply device from the gas recirculation line, and leads into the suction line. A gas tank is arranged in the supply line. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
