In a pulse-echo system for the ultrasonic inspection of tubular specimens, a probe is arranged inside the specimen for relative rotation about the axis of the specimen. In the Fig. 3 embodiment, probes are retained by springs in peripheral holes 14b of a probe-holder rotated by motor 13. The holder is traversed axially relative to specimen 10, guided by member 11 and sprung rollers 15. Under centrifugal forces the probes move against the retaining spring action and contact the specimen wall through a film of coupling fluid on the wall. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) a pair of sealing discs (16, 17) disposed one each side ef the probeholder close off a length of the specimen to define a chamber for coupling fluid and also act as guides for the axial traverse of the probeholder, and the probes are fixed relative to the holder. Centrifugal effects cause any air bubbles in the fluid to collect in the axis of rotation, where they do not disturb the inspection. The probe-holder may, alternatively, be rotated by a turbine driven by coupling fluid flowing through the chamber. |
