The switch rail (3) has a number of contact elements (1,2) arranged in series along the length of the switch rail, with contact points (4) at their facing ends held in contact with one another, the connection between the contact points broken by deformation of the switch rail upon application of an applied external force. The spring bias holding the contact points together is provided by a flat elastic rubber band (8).
