A layer of substrate pastes is formed on a temporary backer 403 and a layer of top coat paste is formed on top of the layer of substrate and both layers are coagulated using a twoheaded coating arrangement, a spreading roller 404 and a coagulating tank 500. The twohead coating arrangement includes a first coating blade 406 adjustably mounted on stand 407 supporting roller 404. A trough 408 is formed by a backing plate 409 and cheek pieces adjustably mounted on stand 407. The second coating blade 412 is located at 35‹ to the first blade 406 and is also adjustably mounted. A second trough 413 is formed between the first and second blades 406 and 412 and by further check pieces adjustably mounted on stand 401. The substrate paste is poured into trough 408 and the top coat paste into trough 413. Located along the inside of the side walls of the tank 500 are horizontal channels 501 through which slide the uncoated edges of backer 403. The water in the tank is maintained at 20‹C by a steam jacket at the bottom of the tank and plastics balls floating on and covering the surface of the water.
