<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit and a light guide plate that can perform distinctive surface light emission. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight unit includes a light guide plate 4 and a linear light source device arranged on one side face of the light guide plate 4. The light guide plate 4 has a protruding part 41 having a bottom face 4y as a concave-convex face. The protruding part is configured so that its radius is formed to be gradually smaller so as to reduce a degree of concavity and convexity as going apart from the side face 4x. Consequently, the protruding part functions as an attenuating means that reduces the intensity of light from the linear light source device as going apart from the side face 4x.
