An emulsifying agent, suitable for addition to a solution of a toxicant in an organic solvent to form a concentrate readily dispersible in water, contains a non-ionic component and an anionic component comprising a salt of an aromatic sulphonic acid, the latter component including at least 15 per cent by weight of a polyamine salt in which the polyamine has 2 to 4 carbon atoms between amine groups. Suitable non-ionic components are polyoxyalkylene derivatives of acids, alcohols, mercaptans, phenols, naphthols, acid amides, or sulphamides, or of oxyalkylene polymers or ethers thereof. Numerous compounds are specified for use as non-ionic or ammonic components. The emulisying agent may also contain a polyvalent metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid, e.g. a calcium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, manganese, cadmium, strontium, or barium salt. Other specified ingredients of the emulsifying agent are the sodium salt of petroleum sulphonic acid, monoamine salts of di- and triisopropanolamine and dodecyl benzene monosulphonic acid, propanol, and high boiling aromatic solvent. In examples, the anionic components are the propylene diamine salt of dodecyl benzene monosulphonic acid, the propylene diamine salt of dodecyl phenol monosulphonic acid, the propylene diamine salt of mahogany petroleum sulphonic acid, the ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, and aminoethyl ethanolamine salts of dodecyl benzenmonosulphonic acid, the amino-ethyl-ethanolamine salt of polyamyl naphthalene monosulphonic acid, the N-3-amino-propyl-morpholine salt of dodecyl benzene monosulphonic acid, and the 2-amino-pyridine salt of dodecyl benzene monosulphonic acid; non-ionic components are polyoxyethylene derivatives of nonyl phenol, tall oil fatty acids, iso-octyl phenol, lauryl alcohol, dodecyl phenol, dinonyl phenol, dodecyl mercaptan, and polypropylene glycol. Toxicants specified in the examples are the butyl ester of 2,4-D, esters of 2,4,5-T, Toxaphene, D.D.T., butoxy-polypropoxy-propanol, benzene hexachloride, and "Malathion" (Registered Trade Mark); organic solvents for the toxicants are kerosene, varsol, xylene, a light hydrocarbon oil fraction, high boiling aromatics and methylated naphthalene. The emulsifying agent is also useful for effecting dispersion of other oily and water-insoluble materials.
