PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which does not cause shortening of the service life of a photoreceptor and deterioration of image quality, by making it less apt to causes damages to the photoreceptor, when a belt conveying body is damaged. SOLUTION: Two-belt edge detecting devices 140, which are paired, are installed on the edges on this side and the inner side of an intermediate transfer belt 51 so as to detect that the edge position of the intermediate transfer belt 51 goes in and out. When an abnormality of the intermediate transfer belt 51 is detected from the output of the belt-edge detecting device 140, a control part 110 actuates a separating mechanism 530 so as to separate the intermediate transfer belt 51 from the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d. After the separation, the control part stops the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d and the intermediate transfer belt 51, and performs a display such that the intermediate transfer belt 51 is to be replaced on a control panel. Since an adhesive matter associated with the damaged cross section or rupture of the intermediate transfer belt 51 does not rub the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d, deterioration in the image quality accompanying the damage of the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d is avoided.
