PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle travel controller for suppressing reduction in fuel economy, while providing a required driving force, when an acceleration is requested. SOLUTION: This vehicle travel controller for controlling a vehicle with an internal combustion engine and a continuously variable transmission mounted thereon is provided with: a control means for controlling the internal combustion engine and the continuously variable transmission, to operate the internal combustion engine in an arbitrary operation point; an operation line 102 composed of operation points of operating a power train at proper efficiency; a means for calculating an operation point X2 on the operation line which attains the required driving force on the operation line; and a means for calculating an intermediate operation point X1 which attains the required driving force and allows the rotation speed of the internal combustion engine to be equal to a value Ne1 between a current engine speed Ne0 and an engine speed Ne2 in the operation point on the operation line. The control means has a function to execute a first control S1 for controlling the internal combustion engine to be operated in the intermediate operation point, and a second control S2 for controlling the internal combustion engine to be operated in the operation point on the operation line, and executes the second control after executing the first control, when the required driving force is increased.
