PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of forming an anodized coating film, which is high in combustion resistance, is excellent in heat resistance and corrosion resistance and is remarkably improved in hardness, on the surface of magnesium or its alloy. SOLUTION: In the anodization of magnesium or its alloy in an electrolyte containing an alkali metal hydroxide or the water soluble salt and a glycol compound, an alkali metal oxalate is added into the electrolyte in the concentration of 7.5-25 g/L.
