The method involves estimating a rate (D) of fuel in a lubricant of an internal combustion engine by measuring intrinsic properties of the lubricant. The fuel rate is considered for controlling regeneration of a post-treatment system. The regeneration of a post-treatment system is interdicted when the estimated fuel rate is greater than a predetermined rate (E). A parameter required for authorizing the regeneration is modified based on the estimated fuel rate. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing a method for controlling regeneration of an exhaust gas post-treatment system.
