<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably access a file corresponding to file identification information based on many kinds of character code systems without requiring a large-capacity memory. <P>SOLUTION: If a file/directory name is written in a character code not registered in a code conversion table for converting an external code into an internal code, the unregistered file/directory name is converted into an alternative file/directory name written in the internal code. The alternative file/directory name is associated with an original one, to be temporarily registered in a map table. When the file is accessed, the original file/directory name is acquired from the map table.
