The device has a sensor contactlessly detecting displacement along an adjusting axis (7) of a brake element (25). The sensor has a measuring axis running in a direction of a gap width and inclined to the adjusting axis such that a change of the displacement during operating a safety brake (1) causes corresponding small change of the gap width. The gap width is determined by reference surface areas running perpendicular to the measuring axis, where the surface areas are assigned to the sensor and/or the brake element. One surface area is formed at a reference liner fixed at the brake element.
