A pedal displacement actuatable multi-speed transmission is for bicycles. It has a pedal shaft(32) rotatably displaceable within the pedal shaft hub of a bicycle frame. There are several drive gears(92,94,96) rotatably mounted on the pedal shaft and a system for connecting each of the drive gears into selective driving engagement with the pedal shaft. A collar(180) is mounted on the pedal shaft for rotation in conjunction with it and permits longitudinal displacement. A device is engageable with the collar and responsive to a predetermined arc of reverse rotative displacement of the pedal shaft for displacing the collar longitudinally.
