The converter (1) has a semiconductor switch (2) influencing a signal form of an output voltage by a periodic repeating switching process or a switching process sequence. Output units (3) output switching commands to the semiconductor switch. The output units supply switched rectangle alternating voltages that are adapted to a periodic output signal form to the semiconductor switch in two modes by signal outputting, where one of the voltages has reduced harmonic rate in comparison to one of the modes. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an output signal form of a motor vehicle frequency converter.
