<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for an optical modulator which includes lower threshold driving for a state change from a planar state to a focal conic state in a threshold shift method or the like and can control gradation in the lower threshold driving in accordance with the amount of address light, and a driving device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The driving method and the driving device for optical modulators are provided. The driving method includes a writing step of appropriately performing selective exposure with address light while applying a voltage V exceeding a lower threshold in the display layer 7a during exposure with address light and not exceeding it during non-exposure between the pair of electrodes 5 and 6 and selecting portions exceeding the lower threshold and portions not exceeding it in order to record an image to an optical address type light modulator 1 wherein display layers 7a and 7b including cholesteric liquid crystals and selectively reflecting the light of a prescribed wavelength and a photoconductor layer 10 are interposed between a pair of electrodes 5 and 6. In the method, the selective exposure with the address light is performed by intermittently applying one or both an optical pulse and a voltage pulse having a pulse width shorter than a saturation time constant of a photocurrent in the minimum amount of light for actual writing.
