PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve optimum performance and power consumption of a storage system having a large number of disk devices. SOLUTION: A first number out of a plurality of volumes included in a storage system belongs to a first volume set, and the first number out of the remaining volumes belongs to a second volume set. The first number of volumes belonging to the first volume set are distributed and allocated to a second number of disk devices, and the first number of volumes belonging to the second volume set are distributed and allocated to a third number of the disk devices, the third number being larger than the second number. A computer connected to the storage system selects either of the first volume set or the second volume set based on predetermined conditions. Data of one file are distributed and stored into the first number of volumes belonging to the selected volume set, and disk rotation of the disk devices, which are not allocated as any of the first number of volumes belonging to the selected volume set, is stopped.
