<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subpixel template matching method for improving the processing speeds while maintaining a high matching accuracy by means of observed correlation values at a pixel where a correlation value is maximum in terms of pixel units and at adjacent pixels. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The original point of local relative coordinates is placed at a reference pixel for maximum correlation, and the local relative coordinate values of the reference pixel for maximum correlation and predetermined adjacent pixels are fixed. A weight equivalent to the degree that an amount of mismatch between an observed correlation value corresponding to each local relative coordinate and an estimated correlation value distribution curve value contributes to a calculated value for an evaluation value of an amount of mismatch between all observed correlation values corresponding to the respective local relative coordinates and the estimated correlation value distribution curve value is added in advance to each local relative coordinate, so that the extreme value coordinate of an estimated correlation value distribution curve is calculated in subpixel units by performing only one calculation instead of a plurality of repeated calculations for calculating the extreme value coordinate using weighted least squares method, so as to achieve subpixel template matching.
