<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber capable of inhibiting pressure fluctuation and securing sufficient flow passage area even in high flow rate. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This shock absorber is provided with a passage 46 in which fluid flows by movement of a piston, and a check valve 49 provided at an end part of the passage 46 and limiting flow of the fluid in one direction. The check valve 49 includes a valve element 51 seated on and separated from the end part of the passage 46 and energizing means 52, 53 energizing the valve element. The energizing means 52, 53 are set in such a manner that the spring constant in a small valve opening quantity of the valve element 51 is set larger than that in large valve opening quantity.
