Automatic location of salients in mammographic images

The automatic location process identifies an object with high contrast to surrounding tissue. Stereoscopic X-ray images are gathered by a digital acquisition system and processed by an image processing algorithm. The histogram of image pixels is analysed and a threshold corresponding to the difference between high contrast objects and the surrounding tissue established. This threshold is then applied to the image to produce a binary image with two grey levels. The binary image is filtered using the morphological criteria appropriate to the object where the point of interest is located, generating a segmented projection of the point of interest. The point of interest is then located in the image co-ordinate axes.
