Reduced complexity viterbi decoding method and apparatus

A Viterbi decoder decdes a symbol that includes a plurality of subcarriers defining modulated data. The Viterbi decoder includes a branch metric computation unit to compute a branch metric for the symbol based on real and imaginary portions of the plurality of subcarriers, channel state information associated with the plurality of subcarriers, and a piecewise bit-by-bit approximation. The Viterbi decoder includes a most-likely codeword estimator to estimate a transmitted coded bit sequence based on the branch metrics computed by the branch metric computation unit for the symbol.
