<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gripping device which can grip a member to be gripped without damaging the same even if the member to be gripped is a small one. Ž<P>SOLUTION: According to the structure of the gripping device 22, upon feeding compressed air into an internal space 48, a gripping pat 26 deforms a diaphragm portion 44 thereof into a disk shape around a point on a vertical axis 52 located at the center of the gripping device 22. When the diaphragm portion 44 is deformed into the disk shape, a circular region enclosed by four contact portions 46 is made radially larger than a lens gripped by the gripping device 22 by about 0.5 mm. When the internal space 48 is exposed to the atmospheric pressure, the gripping pat 26 does not receive external force caused by difference in atmospheric pressure, and therefore the contact portions 46 make contact with the lens sideways.
