<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily generate damping force by an orifice in either stroke of a pressing side stroke or an extending side stroke. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the piston structure for the hydraulic shock absorber 10, a groove width of an annular groove 33A is enlarged than a ring width of a piston ring 37 along an axial direction of a piston 33, and moving of the piston ring 37 between both ends of the annular groove 33A is made possible by a pressure difference between two oil chambers 21A, 21B respectively in the pressing side stroke and the extending side stroke of a piston rod 12. The orifice 51 (or 61) constantly communicated with one oil chamber of the two oil chambers 21A, 21B provided in the piston 33, and opened to a groove bottom of the annular groove 33A of the piston 33 is opened to the other oil chamber by the piston ring 37 moved to either end of the annular groove 33A in either stroke of the pressing side stroke or the extending side stroke of the piston rod 12.
