PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible film material having high heat resistance, incombustibility, and simple handling characteristics, which is useful for a heat-resistant material, a fire retarding material/an incombustible material, or a surface protective material. SOLUTION: A hydrous gelatinous clay film having a mechanical strength and flexibility capable of using as a self-supporting film is a gelatinous clay self-supporting film which is transparent, has adhesiveness to the surface of a material body, and comprises clay as a principal constituent among constituents except for water, and additives wherein the potassium ion proportion in clay interlaminar ions is at least 70% to a total of the clay interlaminar ions. A dried clay self-supporting film useful for a protective layer is obtained by posting and drying the gelatinous film. Thus, a flexible film material is obtained as a hydrous gelatinous film comprising clay having film forming properties as a principal constituent among constituents except for water, and an amount of some range of water, and a dried clay self-supporting film having a total light transmittance of not less than 90% is obtained by drying the hydrous clay film.
