<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent malfunction in which a magnetic head moves to a tape width direction by falsely recognizing the change of transfer speed of a magnetic tape as LTM (Lateral Tape Motion), and to prevent deterioration of a PES (Position Error Signal). Ž<P>SOLUTION: Even if change occurs in transfer speed of the magnetic tape 5 by change in tension due to sticking or charging by high friction between a magnetic layer and a back coat layer of the magnetic tape 5, a speed detector 17 can detect the transfer speed, computes PES<SB>LTM</SB>by change of the direction of tape width (LTM) based on the detected transfer speed and time interval of a servo signal, and controls to move the magnetic head 2 in the direction of tape width based on the computed PES<SB>LTM</SB>. Consequently since movement control of the magnetic-tape 5 to the width direction is carried out only by PES<SB>LTM</SB>based on LTM, the malfunction is eliminated in which the magnetic head moves by falsely recognizing the setting speed change of the magnetic tape 5 as the LTM, and deterioration of the PES can be prevented.
