PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing optical system which selects and performs flange back adjustment and macrophotographing, using a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The photographing optical system carries out the flange back adjustment and macrophotographing, by moving the lens group of part of the photographing optical system in the direction of an optical axis, and the photographing optical system includes: a drive gear engaged with a lens holding frame holding the lens group; a driving means turning the drive gear; a first gear rotated relative to the drive gear; an operating system rotating the first gear; a detecting system detecting a relative positional relation between the first gear and the drive gear; and a control means causing the drive gear to rotate, by making the driving means to drive, based on a detection signal detected by the detecting system, thereby making the lens-holding frame to move in the direction of the optical axis.
