PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetooptical spatial light modulator, which can perform gradation display of a pixel. SOLUTION: In the multi-element spatial light modulator, each of two-dimensionally aligned pixels 4 includes: a plurality of optical modulators 5 disposed thereon so that the adjacent space d is less than 1μm; and a pair of electrodes 2 and 3. According to the magnitude of a current supplied to the pixel 4, all the optical modulators 5 are magnetization-reversed to perform bright-dark display switching, or some of the elements 5 is magnetization-reversed to perform bright-dark intermediate display.
