<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom optical system capable of reducing stray light that reaches an image surface, and to provide a microscopic device equipped with the zoom optical system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The zoom optical system 8 provided to the microscopic device 1 includes: a zoom lens 8a which is composed of a plurality of lens groups that magnify the diameter of light fluxes incident roughly in parallel and output them as roughly parallel light fluxes, and in which at least two of the lens groups move along the optical axis according to the magnification; and a variable diaphragm 8b which is disposed adjacent to the last lens group of the zoom lens 8a and varies the aperture diameter according to the magnification.
