The method involves transmitting transponder-specific information with a frequency in a mode by active transponders (8a, 8b) arranged on a rail vehicle (4). The transponder-specific information are transmitted with another frequency in another mode in response to reception of external trigger signals at the active transponders. The transponder-specific information transmitted with the latter frequency in the latter mode are received at a transponder unit (10). The transponder-specific information received by the transponder unit are evaluated by a control unit (CPU). An independent claim is also included for a system for detecting a moving object along a pre-determined movement route.
